The management board of Hazewinkel Pers and Friese Pers have announced that they will merge to form a single newspaper publishing company, NDC mediagroep, as of 1 June 2007. Both newspaper publishers are part of NDC|VBK publishers. The companies, whose publications include the Leeuwarder Courant and Dagblad van het Noorden, aim to improve service to the market and ensure the long-term continuity of the newspaper division. Staff were informed of the plans today. The merger has no consequences for staffing levels. The new company will continue to publish the two independent daily newspapers (Dagblad van het Noorden and Leeuwarder Courant).
The two newspaper publishers were already incorporated in the Noordelijke Dagblad Combinatie (NDC), which merged with book publisher Veen Bosch & Keuning in 2005. They have co-operated commercially under the name NDC for some time. The name of the new company, NDC mediagroep, derives from this working relationship.
